Sensex at 17000 Up over 200 Pts:RIL gains 4%

The Sensex opened on a positive note at 16,778, which turned out to be the low for the day. The index moved up to a high of 17,013, an intra-day gain of over 240 points, on buying in heavyweights like Reliance. The Sensex finally closed with a gain of 227 points (1.36%) at 17,000. The Nifty was up 71 points at 5,088.

All the sectoral indices closed with gains. The BSE Oil & Gas index gained over 2%. The BSE Realty index wa also up over 2%. Breadth was bullish - out of over 2,940 scrips traded, over 1,960 logged gains.

Reliance gained 4% to close at Rs 1,022 after the LyondellBasell board rejected the takeover bid. Jaiprakash gained over 6% at Rs 145. Tata Power was up over 5% at Rs 1,334.

NTPC, M&M, DLF, HUL, SBI and Tata Motors also closed with gains.

ONGC declined over 1% to Rs 1,100. Maruti, Wipro, L&T and ACC also declined.
