Nifty Ends above 5000 up 97 Pts;Tata Motors Up 12%
Positive Budget cues saw the Sensex open higher at 16,438, which turned out to be the low for the day. Sustained buying in heavyweights saw the index move up to a high of 16,808 - an intra-day gain of over 375 points. The Sensex finally closed with a gain of 343 points (2.09%) at 16,772. The Nifty closed above the crucial 5,000-level with a gain of 95 points at 5,017.
All the sectoral indices closed at higher levels today. The BSE Auto index gained nearly 5%. Breadth was bullish - out of over 2,900 scrips traded, over 2,055 logged gains.
Tata Motors zoomed over 12% to Rs 797 on a slew of brokerage upgrades and better-than-estimated consolidated results including the JLR results.
Tata Steel gained over 6% at Rs 609. Hindalco was up nearly 5% at Rs 169.
M&M, ACC, ITC, Bharti and BHEL also closed with gains.
DLF dropped over 1% to Rs 292. Reliance Infra, ONGC, HUL and NTPC also declined.
Total market turnover (BSE+NSE) was over Rs 89,500 crore. Tata Motors was the most active counter on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 235 crore followed by Tata Steel (Rs 123 crore) and DLF (Rs 102 crore).
