Nifty Ends 53 pts Up at 4855; Airtel Down 4%
The Sensex opened on a flat note at 16,042 and dropped to a low of 16,021 in morning deals. Sustained buying at lower levels on positive Asian cues saw the index move up to a high of 16,310 - an intra-day swing of over 285 points. The Sensex finally closed with a gain of 188 points (1.17%) at 16,227. The Nifty was up 54 points (1.12%) at 4,856.
All the sectoral indices closed with gains. The BSE Metal index was up over 1.5%. Breadth was bullish - out of over 2,880 scrips traded, over 1,555 logged gains.
ACC gained over 4% at Rs 913. Hindalco, M&M and Tata Motors were up over 3% each.
Reliance was up 1% at Rs 1,017. HDFC, HUL, DLF, Maruti and SBI also closed with gains.
Bharti, which had dropped over 9% yesterday, declined over 4% to Rs 272. Hero Honda was down marginally at Rs 1,696. HDFC Bank was also down marginally at Rs 1,607.
Bharti was the most active counter on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 226 crore followed by Bajaj Auto (Rs 168 crore) and OCL Iron (Rs 144 crore).
